Topic: ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Introduction ·         Electricity is a very convenient and useful form of energy. It’s hard to imagine life without electricity—heating, cooling, lighting, refrigeration. But electricity can be very hazardous and dangerous, if proper precautions are not taken. By learning the following basic electrical safety rules we can prevent electrical accidents and thereby protect precious human life and property. Teachers role ·         Explain the importance of electrical safety ·         Explain what are the precautionary measures to be observed ·         Demonstrate electrical tools and explain how to use it ·         Explain the technical specifications of materials used for electrical wiring ·         Demonstrate electrical safety devices such as Fuse and Circuit Breaker ·         Explain how Fuse and Circuit breakers protect electrical equipment’s and wiring from short circuit and overloading conditions. ·         Explain the seriousness of electric shock and how to prevent it.

Students role ·         Student should be aware of electrical safety rules ·         To identify electrical tools used for electrical repair works ·         Aware of precautionary measures to be observe while handling electrical circuits and appliances ·         How to avoid overloading of power outlets. ·         How to joint wires and insulate them. ·         How to operate electrical equipment’s safely at school and home

Objectives ·         Discuss the purpose of electrical safety features ·         Discuss the role of electrical safety devices ·         Discuss the importance of insulated tools and qualitative material used for wiring ·         Create awareness to avoid electrical accidents

Expected Outcomes ·         By the end of the session students will be able to explain importance of electrical safety ·         Aware about electrical safety rules ·         Develop skill how to use electrical tools ·         Can handle electrical equipment’s safely ·         Do minor repair works without waiting for electrician

Activities ·         Select insulated tools from tool box used for electrical work ·         Replace fuse wire of Kit Kat fuse ·         Restore Circuit Breaker in to its ON position if trip due to overload/short circuit ·         Connect/Disconnect electrical equipment’s of laboratory

Assessment ·         Ask student what are the electrical safety measures to be followed in school and at home. ·         Ask student to ensure that material used for wiring is of approved quality i.e. ISI/ISO marked ·         How to connect and disconnect electrical appliances safely from supply mains ·         Ask them to replace fuse and restore Circuit Breaker in case of power failure

Home Task ·         Check all the electrical equipment’s used at home are safe and properly earthed. ·         Prepare the list of safety devices (Fuse/C.B) fixed on all electrical circuits. ·         Draw the
